Let’s talk about the Faceless Dominican Doll . . . probably a good title for a thriller, right? Well, it’s actually a cultural doll of the Dominican Republic mostly seen as a porcelain figurine or in paintings. For those who have traveled and seen the beautiful beaches of Punta Cana, Bávaro, Puerto Plata, and the list goes on; chances are you’ve seen the doll in souvenir shops. This cultural design, originated by the artist Liliana Mera Limé, is mostly known in the Caribbean.
We absolutely ❤️ this doll simply because of the meaning behind it.
Limé's decision to create a doll without features was so pure because she struggled to represent such a mixed culture made up of Taínos, Africans, and Spaniards, thus leaving the face void. There's variety in skin tones and attire, but the essence of the faceless doll remains the same. We’re a beautiful culture not defined by our features. Check out this Spanish video from the Presidential office of the Dominican Republic highlighting this traditional art form.
The Faceless Dominican Doll is the inspiration for our Muñec_ collections. This doll has been around for decades and here at Aura Heights we’re excited to bring the diversity and culture to modern life in a variety of goods.
The fact is there’s a lack of inclusive & elevated Latinx lifestyle brands making our mission clear: motivate underrepresented communities to reach new heights and celebrate their triumphs with their cultura at the forefront.
